How do I use Smartrak Overspeed Reporting?

Overspeed Reporting: Your Smart Way to Monitor Driving Behaviour

Purpose & Best Practice

  • Why it exists: Overspeed Reporting offers a granular view of speeding events - timings, durations, distances, speeds - to help investigate and understand driving behaviour more accurately. It's intended to support thoughtful investigation rather than immediate disciplinary actions.

  • Your first step: Always validate every speeding occurrence before deciding any course of action. Speeding may be legitimate or due to GPS blips - so investigate thoroughly.

Your Step-by-Step Playbook for Using Overspeed Reporting

  1. Define your use case:

  2. Run the report:

    • Choose appropriate grouping (especially for the Severity report).

    • Select a suitable timeframe (e.g. daily, weekly, monthly).

  3. Inspect for validity:

    • Drill down into each overspeed event details.

    • Use map mode to spot anomalies or patterns.

  4. Contextualise before acting:

    • Factor in road conditions, time of day, potential GPS inaccuracies.

    • Confirm whether each incident warrants follow-up or is a false alarm.

  5. Escalate to Smartrak Service Desk if needed:

    • If something doesn’t work or the reports aren’t populating correctly, raise a support request.

This report is a summary of each assets speeding across a given time range, with metrics relating to the regularity and extent of the occurrences. Each asset is then placed in a severity category based on where the assets speeding metrics fit on a scale compared to the other assets in the report. As such, the report is most effective when run with like vehicles / drivers.

This report will detail each individual speeding period of a vehicle during a given time frame. Each occurrence will have an associated start time, duration, distance and minimum / maximum / average speed.

Overspeed Trips Mode

This mode will highlight visually on the map the section of road for which the vehicle was speeding.

It will help determine when, where, and for how long vehicles were overspeeding, as well as identifying the average speed that occurred during the overspeed period.

How are Posted Road Speed Events Generated?

Overspeed events will be generated approximately every 20 seconds from the first overspeed instance to the point at which the driver goes back below the overspeed threshold. By gaining a deeper insight into exactly where the vehicle was throughout the speeding period, it can be better determined if the overspeed period can be attributed to GPS inaccuracies, if any.

These insights from Telematics data with RRS enabled provide managers with an easy-to-read summary of overspeeding incidents and help identify when and where overspeeding behaviour is most prevalent (the days of the week and time of day). These insights help target efforts to reduce driver, passenger and pedestrian risk. There are 3 indicators:

  • Total Overspeeds per Day (Last 7 Days)

  • Overspeeds by Time of Day (Last 7 Days)

  • Overspeeds by Posted Limit

The feature provided is a visual analytics tool within the Driver Safety module. It presents a clear and interactive graphical representation of overspeeding incidents over a selectable date range.

The bar graph indicates the instances of overspeeding, and a detailed table lists information for individual drivers or vehicles (customers without driver ID)

Vehicle Behaviour Report

The existing Vehicle Behaviour Report has been updated to include a column for the total duration of overspeeding. Initially, this column will be marked as ‘Not Recorded'. When the RRS is enabled for the organisation’s fleet, this data will subsequently become available.

This report will remain for general insight into overall vehicle behaviour and reporting on harsh driving metrics, however for more detailed information on overspeed behaviour, the new Overspeed Reports provide more thorough insight.
