Attributes

Attributes

Upcoming in Q1 2026, the Attributes feature is being updated to reflect some changes to the bulk import process and we are adding the ability to send an attribute with emergency messages (both email & SMS). Upcoming changes are marked in PURPLE

What is an Attribute?

An attribute is a piece of information held against a vehicle/device appearing in the resource information box shown by selecting a resource on the map in Smartrak App (identified in screen shot to the right) and reported on in the Smartrak Admin Vehicle Details Report.

There are two parts to an attribute: the attribute name and the attribute value.

The attribute name is the description of the attribute, e.g., Driver Team.

The attribute value is the value of the attribute, e.g., Customer Enablement

Attributes are used widely in the system to identify various pieces of vehicle/device-based information and can be used for vehicle/device assets, and for dedicated vehicles/devices, driver skills, contact details as well as escalation contacts for emergency alerting procedures.

Attributes are not transferred to the new asset during a Vehicle Swap

How do I create a new attribute?

  • Log into the Smartrak Admin site (NZ or AU)

  • Navigate to Other > Attributes

  • You must create the attribute name first e.g. Skill Set

New Process

  • You can chose to Send with emergencies if you want this attribute to be included in the SMS alert

  • Add the SMS format token as per the screenshot, e.g., Skillset

Once the attribute name has been created you can add an attribute value e.g. Customer Enablement

Can I import attributes in bulk?

Yes, but the attribute names need to have been created first.

You can upload attribute values using the Bulk Import tab & download the example spreadsheet (.csv file type) and fill with details.

The remote name or rego can be used to identify resources in the file.

Columns should be named:

Rego or Resource name

Attribute Name 1 (e.g. CC Rating)

Attribute Name 2 (e.g. Colour)

Attribute Name 3 (e.g. VIN Number)

Attribute Name 4 (e.g. Next of Kin)

New Process

There are now three additional tick box options when bulk importing/updating attributes.

  • Remove attributes with empty values

    • When ticked, empty cells in the spreadsheet will cause the corresponding resource attribute value to be deleted and the attribute name will no longer appear for that resource.

    • When unticked, the attribute name will still show but will have no value.

  • Remove missing attribute names for all listed resources

    • When ticked, any attribute names missing from the top row of the spreadsheet will be removed from all listed resources.

    • When unticked, missing attribute names are ignored and the imported resources remain unchanged for those attributes.

  • Remove resources with no values

    • When ticked, all attributes will be removed from resources that are not in the spreadsheet.

    • When unticked, resources that are not in the spreadsheet will remain unchanged.

How do I update/delete existing attributes?

If an attribute name needs to be updated, you can update this using the Manage Names tab. Just type in the new name and click on update, or click delete to remove the name.

    - Note: To delete an attribute name, the associated values must first be removed for all vehicles/devices. The page will display an error if a value is still associated with a vehicle/device.

New Process

The new Manage Names page includes the Send with emergencies tick box and the associated SMS token so that existing attributes can be updated to be utilised with the Attributes in Emergencies feature.
