Smartrak AVL - how often common events are generated

If an asset is fitted with an AVL (automatic vehicle locator) device, you can expect to see events generated as follows:

Event Icons are found here - https://smartrak.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SCP/pages/4423706

Event Name

Description

When will you see this event?

KEY ON

Key has been put in the ignition and turned on

When the ignition is keyed on (start of a trip)

KEY OFF

Key has been turned off

When the ignition is keyed off (end of a trip)

POWER ON

When the AVL unit (re)gains external power, event is generated by having a timed relay installed or vehicle having a master switch

Often occurs at the same time as a KEY ON event

POWER OFF

When the AVL unit loses external power, event is generated by having a timed relay installed or vehicle having a master switch

Depends on the particular setting of the timed relay, but can be anywhere between 30 minutes and 24-hours after KEY OFF

STOP

Vehicle has been in a stationary position for at least 2 minutes

STOP events are used to calculate idle - see this article for more info - https://smartrak.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SCP/pages/78119273

MOVING FROM STOPPED

Vehicle had been stopped and now has started moving

MOVING FROM STOPPED event will generate when the speed of the vehicle is above 20km/h

DIRECTION CHANGE

Vehicle has turned more than 80° while driving i.e. going around a corner

Vehicle going around a corner with a heading of more than 80 degrees

TRAVELLED

Vehicle has travelled in a straight line

The TRAVELLED event is a placeholder event that is generated every 6-12kms depending on the device’s settings. The TRAVELLED event is often generated when vehicle is travelling on a long straight road (i.e. a motorway), therefore the time between TRAVELLED events can be upwards of 5 minutes

OVERSPEED

Vehicle has travelled over the set speed threshold

There are two overspeed settings available

1. Standard - there is one singular overspeed threshold, generally set to 101km/h

2. Posted (Real) Road Speed - depends on the posted road speed for each road, between 30km/h and 110km/h - see https://smartrak.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/SCP/pages/2221408257

For Posted Road Speed, the event is based on the 20-second timer event, for further information please see

BELOW SPEED LIMIT

When vehicle has been over the set overspeed threshold and reduces speed to be below the overspeed threshold

Vehicle is slowed down to below the set overspeed threshold, or the posted road speed

ACCELEROMETER EXCEPTION

Accelerating, braking, cornering at a G-force of more than 0.6Gs

When generated by the vehicle. Caused by driving harshly

BATTERY LOW

Vehicle battery is running low

Did you know, you can set up alerts to be emailed/texted for low battery notifications? Ask us how!

OFF ROAD

Vehicle has moved more than 25m from the centre of a public road

In NZ, this is used to calculate RUC rebates for diesel vehicles

ON ROAD

Vehicle has moved from OFF ROAD back onto the road

An ON ROAD event signals the end of an off road period
