Personal Locator

The Personal Locator was designed to the exact standards required by emergency services and law enforcement personnel.  It gives workers confidence that in the event of an emergency they can call for help.  The Personal Locator is turned on by pushing the power button.  Once the Green LED light is illuminated the unit is now ready for use and will begin tracking as soon as it receives a GPS signal. 

To trigger an emergency alert, press the emergency button until the device begins to vibrate.  The vibration is confirmation that the alert has been triggered.  When raised, an alert is displayed on the Smartrak map and sent by email, SMS, or both to designated alert recipients if configured.  Smartrak map also shows the alert and GPS position of the device carrier.

There are three lights across the top;

  • A solid green light indicates it is powered on

  • A solid a yellow light indicates the battery is low with approx. 12-16 hours left

  • A solid red light indicates the device is out of cell phone coverage and there is no server connection

Standard Operation 

 



A: Emergency Button

Hold until device vibrates (~2 seconds) to trigger an emergency

 

B: Power Button

Hold until device vibrates (~5 seconds) to turn unit on or off.

 

C: Power Light (Green)

Solid green light indicates power on.

 

D: Battery Light (Yellow)

Solid yellow light indicates battery is low (12 – 16 hours left)

 

E: Coverage Light (Red)

Solid red light indicates out of cell phone coverage or no server connection.

Prior to use - *Important please read*

 

PLEASE NOTE: Your Personal Locator will show the last known location on the map site until it acquires a new GPS fix. If the map location does not match the device’s physical location, the corrective action is to take the device into a GPS coverage area and wait for the new GPS fix to occur (in an open outside space). Incorrect location may occur when the device is turned on/recharged and when you first activate the device (initial activation).

For users relying on a call centre or administrator for location monitoring, we advise making contact when the device is activated / turned on and been exposed to GPS coverage in an open outside space to confirm that a GPS fix has occurred and an accurate physical location has been logged.

IMPORTANT: Times to acquire GPS fix may vary depending on weather, satellite location and satellite acquisition time. Please allow several minutes before checking that the map location has updated. Repeat if necessary. Always test all features before use to familiarise yourself and other users with standard operations and to make sure the device is operating as expected. We also recommend implementing regular testing of the device and safety procedures.

Power off events may not always present themselves on the map. If position updates are not occurring this is an indication that the device may be powered off or out of cellular coverage. Be aware that position updates and alerts will not be transmitted while in these states.

Operation

  • Turn the Personal Locator on by pushing the power button (B), then wait for the LED lights to illuminate. The unit will now be ready for use and will begin tracking as soon as it receives a GPS (Refer to above note about method and time to acquire a GPS fix)

  • To trigger an emergency alert, press the emergency button (A) until the device begins to vibrate. The vibration is confirmation that the alert has been

  • When raised, an alert is displayed on the Smartrak map and sent by email, SMS, or both to designated alert recipients if configured. You may designate as many recipients as required. The map also shows the alert and GPS position of the device carrier. Alert recipients engage in their organisation’s emergency

  • Once the emergency procedures are in progress the Smartrak system administrator clears the alert from the map by clicking on the alert message box and entering the actions

  • At the end of the Personal Locator device usage period place the device on the Charging from flat takes approximately 5 hours. See Charger User Guide for more information.

Charging Unit

Place unit on the charger facing outward with the base to the guide. The green light on the charging pad will turn red when it is connected.

The device is charging when it’s green light is on and the yellow and red lights are flashing.

When only the unit’s green light shows, the device is fully charged and ready for use (charging takes 5 hours from flat).

Please note: if the device is completely flat, the device will intermittently flash up lights and then go out again. This is because the device is trying to accrue enough charge to stay powered up. This is normal behaviour; all that needs to happen is for the device to stay on the charging pad for at least 5 hours to gain full charge.

 

Please note: When a PL is fully charged and left on the charger, there is a built in charger circuit which manages the battery charge. It keeps the battery mostly charged, while trying to maintain the life of the battery. It will generally fluctuate between 100% and 85% charged.

There aren't be any implications for units fitted with the inactivity alarm, this is disabled when the unit is on charge

Inactivity Detection Operation

The Personal Locator with Inactivity Detection is the same as the standard Personal Locator, but with the additional feature to determine and alarm, when the user has not been active for a period of time.

  • The personal locator is carried around by an individual and will perform tracking as the standard Personal Locator does with the user still able to manually trigger an emergency alert.

  • The device will vibrate to warn the user if the device has detected no movement for a period of 5 minutes following a typical settling period of no movement of about 20 seconds. The user is required to push the power button for ~3 seconds until a lengthened vibration pulse is felt followed by no more vibrations.

  • If a user does not respond before the 1 minute vibration alert completes the device will automatically trigger an emergency alert. The alert process from this point on is the same as per the manual emergency alert activation.

  • A user can still activate the manual button during the warning, or once the inactivity alert has been triggered.

  • While the personal locator is charging the Inactivity Detection feature is deactivated. This is to stop alerts from being generated while the device is charging. Once removed from the charger the Inactivity Detection function becomes active.

Note: A user can move the device to reset the 5 minute Inactivity Detection counter again, however, during the 1 minute warning period, movement will not reset the timers, the power button must be pressed.

Inactivity Emergency Alerts

Alerts triggered by inactivity are differentiated on the map from manually triggered alerts by displaying 'Inactivity Detection Check Expired' under Extra Info on the alert dialogue box.
