The SPOT Gen4 is designed to support staff working outside of cellular coverage, using satellite connectivity to send location updates and emergency alerts.

User Guide


Key Functions

  • SOS / Help: Send emergency alerts

  • Check-In / OK: Notify contacts you are safe

  • Tracking: Send location updates at set intervals (default 10 minutes)

  • Satellite-based: Works where mobile coverage is unavailable


Device Overview

A: On/Off Button / Indicator

  • Press to turn on

  • Press and hold until rapid blinking to turn off

  • Blinking red = battery low

  • Automatically turns off after 1 hour of inactivity

B: Help & SOS Buttons

  • Press and hold to trigger an alert

C: Check-In / OK

  • Sends a “safe” notification to contacts

D: Track Progress

  • Press & hold to send your location updates for up to 24 hours

E: GPS Signal Light

  • Green blinking = GPS signal found

    • Red blinking = no GPS signal

F: Alert Transmission Light

  • Green blinking = alert sent

    • Red blinking = alert not sent


Getting Started

  • Use outdoors with a clear view of the sky

  • Ensure the SPOT logo is facing upwards

  • Press and hold the ON/OFF button until the light blinks green


Sending an SOS / Help Alert

  1. Lift the protective flap

  2. Press and hold the HELP or SOS button

  3. Wait for the light to blink green

  • Alert transmission can take up to 10 minutes

  • A green blinking light confirms the alert was sent

To cancel:

  • Press and hold the SOS button until the light flashes red

  • Must be done on the device (not via the website)


Tracking

  • Press and hold the tracking (GPS) button until it turns green

  • Sends location updates every 10 minutes (configurable)

Notes:

  • Requires GPS signal (clear sky view)

  • If stationary for 5 minutes, tracking pauses

  • Automatically resumes when movement is detected


Testing Your Device

  1. Go outside with clear sky visibility

  2. Turn the device on

  3. Send a Check-In / OK message

  4. Confirm the message appears in Smartrak


Battery Information

Use only:

  • AAA Energizer® Ultimate Lithium (L91), or

  • AAA Energizer® NiMH rechargeable (NH12)

Important:

  • Blinking red power light = battery low

  • Carry spare batteries

  • Test before each trip

  • Extreme temperatures or obstructions may reduce battery life
